Story
Inspired by a video for the PBS Grand Conference the client was looking for a more space-age and cinematic approach this time, compared to the other videos we’ve done for them in the past. Plus, this was the perfect opportunity to take our brand new iMac Pro for a spin!

Challenge
We were going to push this new iMac Pro to it’s limits ( spec below) — Cinematic lens flares and bokeh, sophisticated particle effects, depth of field, motion blur, the works… and all generated in 3D space, output in 32 bits of colour in full HD, and at 30 frames per second. Impressive!

New iMac Pro (2017, 10 Core, 3 GHz Intel Xeon W, 128 GB 2666 MHz DDR4, Radeon Pro Vega 64 16368 MB, 4TB SSD — Geekbench single-core score 5483, multi-core score 39,857)
Compared with our Old Mac Pro (2012, 12 core, 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon E5645, 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB, 1TB SSD, 12TB HHD – Geekbench single-core score 2231, multi-core score 18,240).
That’s more than twice the power of my old Mac Pro, with a notiable difference in performance while working in After Effects. The upgrade has definately made us more proficient motion designers.
